Our Opthalmology department is situated on the Southeast coast of Norway in the city of Arendal. Arendal`s history dates back to the 16th century when it was established as one of Norway’s important centers for shipping, shipbuilding, mining, timber and iron trade. Arendal was recognized as a major shipping center with many wealthy ship owners who contributed to the city`s architectural appearance. Arendal is famous for it’s small white houses with small picked fences close to the sea. This together with Arendal`s beautiful archipelago has made Arendal one of Norway’s most attractive places to spend leisure time and houses many cottages.
Today Arendal is a city with approximately 50000 inhabitants. Its center for many cultural festivals during the summer period and can offer leisure activities like windsurfing, sailing, kayaking. Agder municipality can offer a wide range of winter sport activities with great mountains for trekking, cross-country or downhill skiing in the winter.

Sørlandet Hospital`s eye department serves as an emergency department for the whole municipality, conducts eye treatment and eye surgery at one location namely Arendal. The Department of Ophthalmology has a retina clinic for medical treatment of retinal disorders, a modern and well-equipped ophthalmology outpatient clinic, 2 surgical wards and a femtosecond laser for cataract surgery.
Our departement has 10 Senior Consultants, 5 resident doctors, 5 optometrists. We have two operating theaters (OR) and are conducting a wide range of operative treatments including strabismus surgery. In 2018 we opened a brand new children’s department where you can engage and work in interdisciplinary teams around each case, in close collaberation with doctors, opticans and nurses.
We are currently seeking: Full time permanent Orthoptist (37,5 hour/week)

Key information
Duties and responsibilities
- Work in a team with an optician and ophthalmologist
- Orthoptic examinations including Hess Screen Test and Synoptophore
- Strabismus – pre- and post-operative assessments
- Amblyopia – assessment and follow-up
- Neuro-ophthalmic examinations
- Vision field examinations
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree as orthoptist or optometry
- Special interest for children and pediatric ophalmology
- Previous experience with pediatric opthalmolgy highly emphasized
Personal qualities
- Motivated with a strong interest in the profession
- Can clearly communicate with patients and colleagues
- Ability to contribute to a positive professional and collegial environment
- Strong professional evaluation skills, indepenant and structured
- Good cooperation skills and personal suitability is emphasized
